Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, Train and Lead Sensory Panels (across Asia)
  • Organize and Conduct Discrimination and Descriptive Tests
  • Conduct Panel Performance Analysis
  • Conduct other Sensory Analysis (e.g. PCA, PLS)
  • Conduct Sensory Consumer Research
  • Data Analysis and Reporting of Sensory Consumer Research Data
  • Business Development and Client Servicing


The successful candidate is responsible for recruitment, training and leading Sensory Panels. The person is supposed to help in setting up sensory testing facilities; and to prepare, plan and conduct discrimination and descriptive tests (sensory panel projects).

In addition, he/she has to train the panel, analyze panel performance and re-train panelists as and when necessary to maintain highest quality. Also he/she has to ensure smooth and timely project execution together with the Sensory Research Team.

The successful candidate is also involved in consumer research, product testing, data analysis, reporting and presentation.

 

Qualifications & Work Experience:

Sensory Scientist/Food Scientist or similar qualification with 5 years plus of ‘hands on’ experience in recruiting, training and maintaining a sensory panel, experiences in conducting various discrimination and descriptive projects using a sensory panel. The candidate also needs to be experienced in data analysis and panel performance analysis. Client-side experiences are preferable.

Senior Sensory Scientist

Function

Conduct Sensory and Consumer Research in support of product, packaging development, processing and quality initiatives for the product development teams for Western European launches. 

 

Scientist will work with the Innovation community to design and conduct appropriate research to advance knowledge of the product and meet the business objectives.

 

Specifically the scientist will determine appropriate research methodologies, coordinate tests, analyze and interpret experimental data and provide technical recommendations, reporting results orally and in written documentation.

 

Accountabilities:

  1. Collaborate as a full team member on the Product and Technical Development teams supporting Western Europe.
  2. Design consumer research studies, with particular emphasis on matching proposed research to project and corporate objectives.
  3. Coordinate studies, including screener and questionnaire development, sample rotation plans, fieldwork supplier management, data analysis.
  4. Create and present accurate, impactful, and actionable reports to internal corporate clients.  Assist management in drawing conclusions and making recommendations.
  5. Develop/adapt novel consumer research techniques that add greater depth, breadth, and speed to the company’s product development process.
  6. Work cooperatively with other functional groups, especially, Marketing Research, Marketing, and Quality to achieve business objectives.
  7. Identifies and creates opportunities for sharing relevant knowledge and information between groups.
  8. Demonstrated and broadly recognized for key influence management skills.
  9. The scientist will help organization thinking process to be switched from intuitive to data-driven – reducing development time and cost, while improving success rate.
  10. The scientist acts as a critical partner challenging the continuous improvement and local implementation of research methods developed at the GIC as well as external sources (suppliers, universities, marketing research agencies, etc.).
  11. The scientist must develop and maintain key internal and external relationships to identify, exchange and apply consumer insights ideas.  This position will have international contacts with other business units worldwide.

 

 

Knowledge & Experience:

Essential:

  • Proven ability to design and coordinate consumer research for new packaged goods, preferably food or beverages
  • Working knowledge and Application of MV statistics (perceptual mapping, drivers of liking); Champions the use of Experimental Designs
  • Excellent written and oral communication and teamwork skills.  Ability to share and explain technical information to individuals with a wide range of backgrounds
  • Influences and Manages Research Programs

 

Preferred:

  • General understanding of market-research techniques and tools, including qualitative research techniques, habits/usage/attitudinal assessment, concept testing, and test market strategies.
  • General understanding of sensory research techniques, with emphasis on uses and applicability to the product development environment
  • General understanding of advanced statistical analysis, especially design of experiments and multivariate techniques
  • Active participation  in professional organizations
  • Educate Partners in subject matter through Corporate Training Programs and/or develop learning tools (internal research reviews).

 

Education:

  • Degree (preferred:  Master’s degree or higher) in either a behavioral science, applied statistics, or food science
  • Track record in a related field (education and experience combined BS+4  years of experience, MS+2 years of experience or PhD + 1 year of experience )

Understanding drivers of wine preference and quality

The Australian wine industry has been very successful however in order to stay competitive it needs to understand why it is so good. A researcher is required to understand what drives consumer choices for wines.

 

CSIRO Human Nutrition is offering an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary research team of psychologists; consumer scientists and sensory scientists using facilities in Adelaide and Sydney for running consumer panel testing and food and beverage preparation. Additional expertise is now needed to assist in research on predictors of perceived quality and preference for Australian wine. The project assists in meeting Food Futures National Research Flagship Project goals and contributes to enhancing CSIRO's capability to understand consumer behaviour and decision making in respect to food and beverage choice.

 

An enthusiasm and willingness to develop in this innovative field is required, with tertiary qualifications in social psychology, consumer science or quantitative market research expected. An aptitude of multivariate statistics is also essential. This position may be offered as a Post-Doctoral Fellowship to the right person who has a PhD in a relevant field conferred within the last 3 years.

 

This position is offered for a 3 year term.
