David is a graduate of the University of Reading, UK and has been working in the field of sensory evaluation since 1977. He is currently the Director of Sensory Analysis for Perfumery Division, Firmenich SA, Switzerland and leads a global team of sensory scientists involved in evaluation of home and body care products, and fine fragrances. Formally he led the sensory and market research group at CCFRA, UK looking at new applied consumer and sensory methods, including sensory quality assurance, improved techniques for collecting consumer data, the use of trained panels and consumers for product optimisation and product development purposes, and monitoring of new product activity in the UK marketplace.
David was awarded the 1994 Heinz Travelling Scholarship for Scientific Excellence based on his contribution, publication and presentation of work which had direct application for the food industry, and which significantly enhanced the scientific stature of the Research Association. He also acted as lead editor of the ‘Guidelines for Sensory Analysis in Food Product Development and Quality Control’ prepared jointly with sensory analysts in industry to further the practical use of sensory analysis in food product development and quality control.
David was instrumental in the establishment of the European Sensory Network, formed to stimulate new developments and applications in applied sensory analysis, acting as Chairman and Vice-Chairman. A member of the International Standards Organisation committees on sensory methodology, David is also a member of the scientific committee on a number of internal sensory science symposia, including organiser of the 6th Pangborn Sensory Science Symposium in 2005.
