SIK  – The Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology is owned by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. SIK conducts strategic and applied research for the industry by participating in joint projects with goal-oriented research programmes.

SIK offers its customers consultancy services in the areas of food safety, process engineering, product development and environment. SIK provides tailored training courses for individual companies and participates in graduate and undergraduate course programmes at universities and colleges in Gothenburg, Lund and Uppsala.

SIK research strategies 2008-2010:

The objective of SIK R&D will be to reinforce and develop the competences and ideas that can support and inspire industry in their efforts to satisfy consumer needs and demands, integrating all quality aspects into a total impression of product properties, focusing on the demands for health, environment and convenience. Efforts will concentrate on building three strong knowledge platforms to support the needs of industry in the development of foods for tomorrow's consumer. These knowledge platforms are defined in the following terms:

&nb

  • Sustainable food production, building up knowledge of  production systems and preconditions for food  production.
  • Product design based on the interpretation of consumer needs, wishes and demands to be transformed into actual product properties and functionality.
  • Process technology for unique product qualities, determining the role of processes to achieve the desired properties and functions.

These platforms are based on, and will further develop, the core competences created at SIK over the years. An important component in this development will be co-operation with strong external competence centres, at university departments and institutes for instance, in Sweden and abroad.

SIK has approximately 90 employees and has a strategic partnership with Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association in UK.

The SIK head-office is situated in Gothenburg with regional offices in Lund, Uppsala, Umeå and Linköping.
